DARREL ROCHE was born in the western suburbs of Sydney, Australia, and his parents were of Irish, English, and German ancestry. After leading a short expedition in the remote highlands of New Guinea in 1969 at the 20, he was stimulated to launch his own 1970/71 Australian Adventure as a journey of discovery and a sweet taste of freedom.
His love of history and yearning for adventure predominated from childhood onwards. He achieved the Queen’s Badge and Duke of Edinburgh’s Award with Boys’ Brigade Australia, was awarded the Australian Defence Medal for six years’ service in the Australian Army Reserve, spent twelve years working with Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders in the Kimberley deserts of Western Australia, Outback Queensland, and the Torres Strait islands, and served for four years as a Commonwealth lighthouse keeper on Queensland’s remote islands and headlands of Queensland.
Darrel studied at the University of New England in Armidale N.S.W. and has a Bachelor of Arts degree with double majors in Ancient History and Studies in Religion. He is also a Justice of the Peace (Qualified) for the State of Queensland, and a founding member (1970) of the Australian Land Cruiser Club of Australia.

SYNOPSIS
The Greatest Adventure of a Lifetime in the Mighty Australian Outback!
Ever yearned for freedom and adventure? These three young lads did, and they experienced plenty of it during a fourteen-month odyssey through Outback Australia in 1970 and 1971 in their trusty Landcruiser.
Escaping suburban boredom and 9-to-5 monotony, where their only travel involved back-and-forth trips to work, Darrel and his two companions cut the umbilical cord to their jobs, families, and security to embark on a journey of 24-hour, 7-day-a-week freedom in the era before computers and mobile phones dominated our lives.
This is their true story of making wise decisions and some howlers, experiencing danger, making startling discoveries, and encountering memorable characters while absorbing the beauty of the mighty and majestic Australian Outback!
REVIEWS
What a cracking read! The adventures and experiences these guys had back in the 70's you would never have these days. I want a mum like Darrel's who says here's a car, don't come back for a year! You can't buy these kind of memories and I'm glad the author wrote this one so we could ride the adventure with him. Amazon
